Eight leaders in the field of statistics and data science will give talks at the seventh Celebration of Statistics and Data Science, slated for this Fall on the Cornell campus.

Hosted by the Department of Statistics and Data Science, the celebration and conference begins at 8:30 a.m., Friday, Sept. 6, in the J. Willard Marriott Executive Education Center in the Statler Hotel. The day-long event celebrates Cornell’s rich history in statistics, data science, and mathematics, and showcases leading researchers who are driving innovation in the field. Registration is now open to members of the Cornell community, but seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

“This celebration shows the impact Cornell is having in shaping some of today’s field leaders in statistics and data science,” said David Ruppert, the Andrew Schultz Jr. Professor of Engineering in the School of Operations Research and Information Engineering, professor of statistics and data science, and the celebration’s faculty lead. “It’s an opportunity to reconnect with alumni while offering the Cornell community an opportunity to hear about the latest cutting-edge research in the field.”

Among the speakers is Richard Smith, Ph.D. ‘79, the Mark L. Reed III Distinguished Professor of Statistics and Professor of Biostatistics at the University of North Carolina, who is this year’s recipient of the department’s Distinguished Alumni Award. A scholar who studies the statistical aspects of climate change research, Smith will give the keynote talk.

The other speakers are:

·      Sally Thurston, M.S. ‘91, professor of biostatistics and environmental medicine in the Department of Biostatistics and Computational Biology at the University of Rochester.

·      Sidney Ira Resnick, the Lee Teng Hui Professor in Engineering Emeritus in the School of Operations and Research and Information Engineering at Cornell University.

·      Whitney Huang, assistant professor in the Department of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at Clemson University.

·      Doug Nychka, professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics in the Colorado School of Mines.

·      Ben Shaby, M.S. ’06, Ph.D. ‘09, associate professor in the Department of Statistics at Colorado State University.

·      Dorit Hammerling, associate professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics in the Colorado School of Mines.

·      Daniel Fink, M.S. ’00, Ph.D. ‘02, senior research associate at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

Along with talks, the celebration also includes a poster session and dinner.

This event is in-person only and will not include a virtual attendance option.
