This past June, Professor Florentina Bunea was elected as a council member of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS), where she will serve a 3-year term. While a member of the council, Professor Bunea aims to help promote understanding of new and complex applications of mathematical statistics. "I view training the next generation of statisticians in this spirit as key for statistics as a discipline to maintain a leading role in sciences," she said in a pre-election statement. In furtherance of the purposes of the Institute, the Council determines policies and supervises the affairs of the Institute, including overseeing journal publication, international conference organization and fellowships.
The IMS is the premier international institute that fosters the development and dissemination of theoretical statistics and probability, as well as their applications. Some of the IMS's top tier journals or supported journals include the Annals of Statistics, the Annals of Probability, and Bernoulli, to name few.
