Professors Bunea and Wegkamp Lead LDHD Program at SAMSI

Graphical image of data
Friday, February 7, 2014

Florentina Bunea and Marten Wegkamp are among the program leaders of the 2013-14 Program on Low-dimensional Structure in High-dimensional Systems (LDHD), held at the Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute (SAMSI). The LDHD program is devoted to the development of methodological, theoretical, and computational treatment of high-dimensional mathematical and statistical models. Possibly limited amounts of available data pose added challenges in high dimensions. The program will address these challenges by focusing on low-dimensional structures that approximate or encapsulate given high-dimensional data. Cutting edge methods of dimension reduction will be brought together from probability and statistics, geometry, topology, and computer science. These techniques include variable selection, graphical modeling, classification, dimension reduction in matrix estimation, empirical processes, and manifold learning.

As leaders of the program, F. Bunea and M. Wegkamp organized a summer school in August 2013, will co-chair the conference Statistical Inference in Sparse High-dimensional Models: theoretical and computational challenges, February 24-26, 2014,and organize the closing workshop of the program, May 12-14, 2014.
