Cornell's Department of Statistics and Data Science (SDS) has added a new assistant professor to its faculty for the coming academic year.
Dr. Ahmed El Alaoui, currently a Simons-Berkeley research fellow at the Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing at UC Berkeley, will join SDS in January 2021. His research interests revolve around high-dimensional phenomena in statistics and probability theory, statistical physics, algorithms, and problems where these areas meet.
This past February, he presented a talk, "A high-dimensional probability lens on estimation, testing, and optimization," during SDS's Statistics Seminar.
El Alaoui received his PhD in 2018 in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences from UC Berkeley, advised by Michael I. Jordan. He was afterwards a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford University, hosted by Andrea Montanari.
