Beginning in Fall 2027, the Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science will offer two online master's degree programs in artificial intelligence designed for working professionals seeking to deepen their expertise.

The programs provide two distinct pathways for developing greater understanding and knowledge of AI. The M.S. in artificial intelligence provides a deep technical foundation for those interested in building and advancing AI technologies, with coursework focused on the mathematical, computational, and systems principles behind modern AI.

The M.S. in applied artificial intelligence focuses on applying AI in professional settings with no programming or math experience required. The track will prepare students to leverage emerging technologies to solve real-world challenges, transform workflows, and spur innovation across industries.

“Cornell has played a foundational role in the development of AI, and these new programs extend that legacy by bringing learners into direct contact with the ideas, research, and expertise that are driving the field forward," said Sorin Lerner, dean of Cornell Bowers.

Both programs combine flexible online learning with short residential experiences, offering access to the university’s extensive and interdisciplinary AI ecosystem.

"Professionals today need opportunities to develop both technical expertise and practical skills in artificial intelligence. They also need the ability to evaluate thoughtfully how these technologies are developed, applied, and governed,” said Matt Wilkens, associate dean for education at Cornell Bowers. “Through rigorous coursework and engagement with leading faculty and peers, students will learn how to lead responsibly, and create impact across a wide range of fields."

The first cohorts for both programs will begin in fall 2027.
