Data Science Minor
Learning Outcomes:
  1. Build core, foundational skills and knowledge in statistical techniques and computer programming
  2. Implement these skills in disciplinary settings that align with their chosen areas of study
  3. Conduct data analysis and interpretation
  4. Effectively synthesize, present and communicate their results
  5. Understand the broader contexts and impact of big and complex data in scholarship and in our society
To Complete the Minor:

Please submit this form only after you have completed all of the following courses or once you are in your final semester of fulfilling these requirements.

Six courses are required in total for the minor:

1 COURSE from the Core Statistics Category
1 COURSE from the Core Computer Programming Category
4 COURSES from the following categories:
  • Data Analysis
  • Domain Expertise
  • Big Data Ethics, Policy and Society
  • Data Communication
At least one course should be from each of three different categories, while the fourth can come from any category.

Students Graduating in/before August 2025:
  • No more than two courses can be concurrently used to meet core requirements for a major, though they may be used to satisfy elective requirements.
  • Students who are majoring in a subject that requires an introductory programming course (such as CS 1110), must satisfy “Core Computing” with a more advanced programming course.
Students Graduating in/after December 2025:
  • Students can overlap one course for the “Core Statistics” category and one course for the “Core Computing” category with their major coursework. This is a total of two courses. All other courses taken for the minor (in the four remaining categories) will not be able to overlap with major coursework.
  • Students who are majoring in a subject that requires an introductory programming course (such as CS 1110), must satisfy “Core Computing” with a course that lists CS 1110 or CS 2110 as a prerequisite course.
**Please note: Students are not permitted to minor in both Data Science and the Information Science Minor with the Data Science Concentration; you must choose only one of these two minors.**

Students may use one course from a study abroad semester for minor requirements, if approved by the appropriate Cornell department for course equivalency.

All minor coursework must be taken for a letter grade.
